The Roost

The Project
The Roost had to do two jobs at once: work as a real garage and make the apartment above feel like a place someone would choose to stay.
Built from the ground up in 2026, the project pairs a detached two-car garage with a 510-square-foot studio apartment above. The building sits beside the house, so the exterior needed to feel related without simply copying it. Inside, the challenge was scale: a full kitchen, bath, king sleeping area, sitting space, storage and private access all had to fit comfortably into one compact plan.

A short record of the build: foundation, framing, enclosure and interior work. The point is the progression, not every day of the job.
The Finished Building
The goal was not to make the new garage disappear. It was to make it belong.
The black garage door and metal awnings give the new building its own presence, while the white siding, roof form and warm wood details tie it back to the house. Upstairs, simple materials and a restrained palette keep the studio from feeling overworked. The result is compact, practical and deliberately residential—not a room that happens to be over a garage.
